Creativity that supports recovery

Art, music and craft sessions are a regular part of life at Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals. These creative activities help patients feel calmer and happier – and can even help them recover faster.

rb&hArts is our award-winning arts programme. It offers a break from treatment and give people a lift when they need it most. From live music on the wards to hands-on craft sessions, it makes time in hospital less stressful and recovery more comfortable.

Many patients at our partner hospitals are living with complex health problems or serious heart and lung conditions. Spending long periods of time in hospital can leave them feeling isolated, anxious and frustrated. Our range of creative activities help boost wellbeing, build confidence and ease loneliness – and bring people together at the same time.

rb&hArts includes a range of projects for patients of all ages – as well as for staff and families. That includes:

  • Visual Arts – Curated exhibitions, commissioned artworks and a permanent collection of over 1200 pieces
  • Vocal Beats – Drop-in music and beatboxing sessions for children and young people
  • Singing for Breathing – Weekly singing sessions for people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and asthma to ease tension and improve breathing
  • Live Music – Performances from our resident comedy violinist and guest musicians on the wards
  • Crafternoons – Monthly workshops open to patients, visitors and staff

The creative experiences bring comfort, joy and moments of peace when they’re needed most – helping people feel seen and supported as individuals, not just patients.

With your support, we can keep bringing creativity into care for everyone who walks through our doors.
