Robotic technology is reshaping healthcare with the potential to speed up lung cancer diagnosis and treatment

Transforming the future of lung cancer with the Ion robot

Nearly half of all cases are diagnosed at stage four, when treatment options are limited, leading to death in 73% of cases. But when tumours are found early more than 9 in 10 people can survive. That’s more time with loved ones. More time to enjoy new experiences. More time to laugh and make memories.

The combination of AI and robotic technology are changing the game for diagnosis and treatment. The Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system is a minimally invasive procedure, a technique using tiny incisions that can reach nodules, as small as 6mm, around the size of a grain of rice.

Royal Brompton Hospital was among the first centres in Europe to trial the Ion Robotic System and is the first NHS hospital to introduce Ion bronchoscopy for clinical use. It enables doctors to access difficult-to-reach areas, deep within the complex structure of the lung, often too difficult or risky to reach using traditional methods.
